Why is my payment automatically captured?

If a transaction gets captured automatically, this can have several reasons. It can mean that the capture settings are set to auto-capture, the capture delay can be set to 0, or the payment method itself is set be auto-captured. Find a detailed explanation on each of these reasons below:

  1. The capture settings are set to auto-capture. 
    In your Customer Area, on merchant account level, the capture settings can be setup in the merchant settings. In these settings you can choose from various capture delays including immediate, manual, and between 1 - 7 days. 

    To see these settings, go to Customer Area > select your merchant account > hover over Account > select Settings > see Capture Delay
    If this value is set to immediate your payment will capture immediately after authorisation.
  1. The "captureDelayHours" parameter is set to 0 in the payment request. 
    When submitting a payment, one of the fields you can populate in the payment request is captureDelayHours. If this value is set to 0, then your payment will capture immediately after authorisation. 
  1. The payment method itself is set to auto capture. 
    Payment methods can be setup with different authorisation types. For some payment methods you can choose between type "Sale" and type "Auth".

    SaleThe payment is authorised and immediately captured afterwards. There will be no need to make an additional capture request for payment methods with this authorisation type.
    AuthThe transaction remains at authorised until a capture is submitted. For payment methods that have this authorisation type, an additional capture request needs to be submitted.

    To see these settings, go to Customer Area > select your merchant account > hover over Account > select Payment methods > see Authorization Type 

    Type Auth will act within the rules setup at the merchant settings. While type Sale acts as a combination of authorization and capture and will therefore auto capture your payment. There are certain payment methods that do not support type Auth flow. These payment methods will always be set to type Sale.
