3D Secure liability shift occurs when the liability for fraudulent chargebacks (stolen or counterfeit cards) shifts from you to the card issuer.
It occurs when 3D Secure payment is successfully authenticated for one of the following card schemes:
- Mastercard
- Maestro
- Visa
- American Express
- Bancontact
- Cartes Bancaires
- JCB
- UnionPay
There is no liability shift for recurring transactions. For details on the exact rules of when liability shift occurs, please refer to: 3D Secure chargeback liability shift rules.
There are some other situations where the 3D Secure liability shift occurs. These depend on the acquirer and combination of 3D Secure responses.
You can check whether there was a liability shift for a specific payment in the Customer Area. Go to Transactions > Payments > [Find the payment using the PSP Reference]. You can see whether there was a liability shift under Processing:
